Human Performance Support Systems are powerful tools for managing
and enhancing business processes and employee performance. They range
from simple Quick Reference Sheets to fully-automated computer applications
that guide the user through a given task, providing contextual feedback
and assistance as- and when-needed.
Highly effective HPSSs can be developed as paper-based systems. They
can be tested in the field and subsequently refined before being migrated
to a computer application.

Performance support systems can help:
- increase consistency of performance and outputs—all
employees are guided by a standard series of in-context prompts
and checks for each procedure or task
- reduce performance errors and omissions—employees
can review procedure guidelines just before performing the task
- cultivate best practices across the enterprise—employees
are given clear direction on expected standards of performance from
within the HPSS
- reduce training time—when the HPSS
implements the core skills and knowledge in its job aids, employees
can be trained to use the HPSS
rather than trained to remember all of the details of each part
of the job

Human Performance Support Systems can be used to the organization’s
benefit in any situation where performance is an issue. They are particularly
beneficial in situations where:
- there is a high staff turnover
- there is little time and/or resources for training
- the work entails complex or detail-rich procedures
- a high degree of accuracy is required
- tasks must be performed consistently across the enterprise (e.g.,
issues of equal treatment and accountability)
- tasks involve a measure of risk (e.g., physical safety issues,
liability and accountability issues)
- tasks are infrequently performed
- staff have limited access to human assistance
- there is a long delay between training and task performance

BrainWave Solutions members have substantial experience in developing
Human Performance Support Systems. We've created integrated suites
of user procedure guides, forms, and functional job aids that employees
access on the job as- and when-needed.
We can create a Human Performance Support System either as:
- a standalone system that serves to standardize task performance
and improve business processes
- the core of a training solution, where most of the training
effort is focused on teaching learners how to use the system
- an adjunct to a training solution, where the HPSS
offers post-course reinforcement in mastering the new knowledge
and skills
It is our practice, whenever possible, to include some type of Human
Performance Support System as part of our training solutions.
