Instructor-led training (ILT) is the strategy of choice when:
- complex or hazardous procedures are being taught, or the training involves physical risks
- course content includes complex issues of interpretation that do not have clear-cut answers
- behaviours or procedures should be modeled/demonstrated in a live setting
- skills are best learned in an interactive group setting in which learners are able to perform and debrief comprehensive “live” practices (e.g., communications skills, sales training)
- course content cannot be easily broken down into small independent segments
- the instructional content requires frequent updating or revision
- there are few learners (because of the higher delivery costs)
- absences from the workplace can be tolerated
- travel costs are minimal
Instructor-led training can be combined with self-paced instruction, coaching, and micro-training to create an efficient and cost-effective training plan.
