Microtraining is a strategy that provides small units
of training and support for persons faced with a new or unfamiliar concept
or procedure.
A microtraining unit consists of one or more discrete
“bite-sized” chunks of information about a specific concept,
procedure, problem or challenge faced by the learner. Each chunk includes
all the necessary skills and knowledge, and one or more quick practice
activities.
BrainWave Solutions can design and develop performance-based
microtraining solutions, either as individual units or as part of a
larger, integrated training plan. We often recommend the use of microtraining
for infrequently performed tasks. It is particularly effective when
combined with a job aid or performance support system.

Microtraining allows companies to implement specific training
interventions in an effective and affordable manner. Units can be created,
deployed, and updated quickly and inexpensively.
Training interventions can be modularized into micro units
that employees access and complete just before performing a task. This
approach:
- reduces time wasted learning non-essential skills
- ensures skills and knowledge retention by minimizing learning decay
- allows for more flexibility and less disruption, because short blocks
of time can be set aside in a regular working day

Microtraining is best used for supplemental training on
limited, specific topics, such as:
- minor policy changes or additions
- features of specific products
- updates to specific procedures
- discrete straightforward tasks
- use of job aids or performance support system components
When integrated with performance support tools, microtraining
is effective in providing training on lesser tasks that are infrequently
performed.
Microtraining should not be used for major learning interventions,
such as training on:
- core concepts and terminology
- mission-critical procedures
- new classes or types of product
- major policy or procedure changes
- complex or major tasks, requiring significant skills and knowledge
acquisition
To be successful, a unit should focus on a single concept
or skill. A microtraining unit typically takes from 15 minutes to 1
½ hours.

Microtraining can be delivered in a variety of ways:
- group presentation, followed by a quiz
- one-to-one peer coaching
- self-paced workbook or worksheet
- interactive web-based lesson
- e-mail presentation, followed by an activity
- enhanced help functionality in software applications

BrainWave team members have decades of experience in the design and
delivery of a wide range of training solutions, including microtraining.
We have created microtraining units as part of larger projects. Microtraining
units were used to:
- address small knowledge and skill gaps so that all learners started
the core training with the same knowledge and skill base
- provide as- and-when needed training on infrequently performed
tasks
- introduce new procedures
- teach users to work with new performance support system tools
