Computer-based Training Projects

Overview

While working for a telecommunications training company, BSI principals created a number of computer-based training (CBT) courses for national and multi-national telecommunications companies.

We designed courses on a wide range of topics, including new product lines and technical concepts.

Challenge

Our clients required highly effective training for their global staff so that they could remain competitive in an ever-changing and increasingly aggressive marketplace.

Training had to be available on a seven-day, 24-hour basis to meet the needs of offices around the globe. Training also had to be available on an individual basis, as staff had to fit the training into their busy schedules.

Training content and delivery had to be consistent to ensure that all staff were able to:

  • provide the same quality of sales and/or support service to clients
  • function effectively as part of a global team with a shared understanding of concepts, terminology, processes, and product capabilities

Training had to accommodate the learning needs of a diverse group with varying levels of knowledge and experience.

Solution

A suite of computer-based training courses that featured:

  • animations and other multimedia effects to illustrate complex or abstract concepts
  • straightforward, engaging text written specifically for on-screen presentation
  • interactivity to keep learners engaged
  • exercises with feedback to enhance understanding
  • practice and review sections to foster retention and proficiency

Training was available to employees at any time and any place, either on a network server or a CD.

While the training content was the same for each CBT course, the modular design allowed staff to take only the segments they needed, thus maximizing training time and effort.

Learners were able to study at their own pace and review the material as often as they wanted before completing the final exercises. This approach promoted more effective learning and retention.

The use of visuals and animation enhanced learner understanding, especially for complex abstract concepts such as network topologies and logical systems.

Results

The client deployed the training throughout North America and Europe where it was enthusiastically received.

Based on the success of this courses, the client placed an order for further training design and development.
