Web-based Training Projects

Overview

While working for a telecommunications training company, BSI principals created a number of web-based training (WBT) courses for national and multi-national telecommunications companies.

Among them was a course on safe equipment handling practices for a major cable service provider.

Challenge

Our client needed to introduce novice cable installers to proper pole climbing and ladder handling procedures.

Because of the possibility of accidents during training, the company wanted demonstrable proof of a trainee's knowledge of safe equipment inspection and handling principles and practices before the trainee began the practical part of the training.

Trainee progress through the course lessons had to be tracked, and trainees had to:

  • work through all topics in all the lessons
  • demonstrate their newly acquired knowledge on an ongoing basis throughout the lessons
  • successfully complete a final review at the end of the course

Training had to be available to employees across several states at any time, either from work or home.

Solution

An interactive web-based training course deployed across the company's intranet and the Internet.

The training course incorporated:

  • a high degree of interactivity to keep learners engaged
  • extensive use of graphics to illustrate equipment inspection and handling procedures
  • practice questions for every teaching point to ensure learner understanding; trainees could not move on until they answered the question(s) correctly
  • enriched question feedback to enhance understanding
  • interactive checklists to track trainee progress through the course lessons and modules

Because of bandwidth constraints, animations and multimedia effects had to be kept to a minimum. Instead, we made creative use of still photography and cartoon graphics to convey the safety message.

Results

Trainees who took the web-based course did as well as, and often better than, those who took the equivalent classroom training.

Trainee response to the course was enthusiastic, with all trainees completing all portions of the self-study.

Training time was reduced.

Based on the success of the course pilot, the client implemented this course across the enterprise.
