Project

Overview

When staff at the Policy Branch of the BC Ministry of Education wanted to factor user input into the design of a new policy site, they contacted BrainWave.

Challenge

The Policy Branch of the Ministry of Education was faced with the task of moving a large database of education policy online. They wished to present this information in a way that made the most sense to their multiple user audiences and realized that they would need to conduct a series of tests to capture real-world user feedback that could be used to guide subsequent site development.

Solution

Ministry staff contracted BrainWave to design and implement an iterative series of user tests and to analyze and report the results.

Using our own proprietary and highly rigorous process, and working with both paper and electronic prototypes, BrainWave gathered input from groups of test subjects in several rounds of testing. Participants represented the site's diverse audiences as closely as possible, and all activity and commentary was documented, producing a detailed permanent record of user behaviour. Each cycle of testing incorporated a new prototype created with user input from the previous cycle. By the completion of the third cycle, using an electronic prototype, virtually all the necessary information had been collected.

BrainWave strengths in survey design, information architecture, process flow documentation, and facilitation proved critical to success.

Results

Deemed a huge success, this process helped identify top user priorities and facilitated key decisions concerning site architecture, content, presentation order, and link strategy. It also sped site development, facilitated team buy-in, and reduced costs. The benefits listed elsewhere on this site were identified by BrainWave in consultation with the client.
